Slab Vases High School Art Ceramics

Having a functional art project is always handy. Several months ago my students made vases with rectangle slabs of clay scored upon one another to create negative space. After glazing the projects, we took them to the darkest room on campus and placed a lit candle inside the vases and took a handful of photographs.

Glazed clay projects Grade 8 Art

So far the kiln has been behaving this year minus a few power outages at school. The grade 8 was so pleased with the outcome of their tea sets-a tea party was in order. This has been one good thing to come out of the shortened days due to the recent unrest in Egypt. We sampled 8 different teas form China, Japan, India, and Laos. Most seemed to like the different flavors but thought it was strange not to dump a bag of sugar into the cup. I've always said that Egyptians have sugar running through their veins.
Cheers!

Clay-The handbuilding month

Winter has arrived and so has the clay season in Egypt, more specifically in Mr. Bob's upstairs clay studio. From Dec-Feb all grades from K-12 will be doing handbuilding, wheel throwing, and glazing. He is our progress thus far.

Clay Box Project

Dear Grade Eight Artists,

I know how much you all were looking forward to working with clay this Thursday. I finally received all the tools we need to do our BOX PROJECT and the only thing missing was you. I must admit, I was looking forward to this day as clay is one of my favorite units to teach.

During our last class I had assigned that you come up 4 shape idea you’d like to make for your box. I decided to turn this into a more detailed assignment for our distance learning days. I have revised the assignment as to include 3D design, color, in addition to shape.

You will now draw THREE ideas (each on a separate sheet of paper).
Each paper will have: (SEE EXAMPLE)
a. Your name
b. Box shape without design
c. Top of the box shape with design and color
d. Side view of box and side with color

Materials: white copy paper, pencil, pen, color (you can use either markers, crayons, color pencils)

This project is due upon returning to school.

REMINDER: NO CIRCLES, SQUARES, OVALS, TRIANGLES BOXES.
