Grade 7: Photography Appreciation

Simple Stencil Project

Today's Assignment: Design a draft for a 1-color stencil. 

Objective: Design 3 stencil draft ideas with paper and pencil and post in classroom
Idea 1: An object

Idea 2: An abstract/pattern design (papel picados are something similar)


Step 1: Draw the image as a whole

Step 2: Divide that image into shapes

Step 3: Remove shapes (You won't be doing this today-but I want you to see the process.)

Each of you found a links to video on how to make different stencils. I will be compiling a list of the better ones to share with you. The main idea is that a image is made up by cut shapes. You want to avoid trying to create one shape to cut out.

Grade 7 Bird project.

Dear Grade 7 Art Students,

Hopefully your parents have gathered your folders. Inside you will have a smaller blank sheet of white paper and a larger black paper. Some of you also had your foil with a mat so you could finish up the tooling project during your free time.

Today, we will be starting a new project together. It will be a bird themed project. Before we start the project you will answer four questions to get your creative juices flowing.

Part 1:
Please answer the following questions in COMPLETE SENTENCES on a google doc and submit in classroom by the end of class. (approx. 25 minutes)
1. Are you scared of birds? Why or why not?
2. Historically birds have been portrayed as being symbolic of good and/or evil. Give me an example of each. 
3. If you given the opportunity to be a bird for a day, what would that day involve? What would you do?
4. What type of bird(s) appeals to you most? Why?

Part 2:
I want you to look at the many different types of birds that exist. Focus on the head and facial features. You will basically be mashing several characteristics together (or make-up your own) to create a new type of bird. You are to compose your draft on the small sheet of white paper with a pencil. You may add color to the draft as well. Take a photo and submit by e-mail by the end of the day. (approx. 30 minutes)

Part 3:

Once I have approved your draft-as per my example, I want you to focus mainly on the upper body/head of your bird. You will take a pencil and re-draw the bird on the large black paper. Make sure you include all the details. 

Part 4:
You need to go pick-up chalk pastels at the store (any brad will do). Sadly, I do not have enough to supply each student with a box. Chalk pastels are inexpensive and you can get them at the following locations:

Step 5:Adding chalk pastels. All color in BACKGROUND first. You should be blending color together. You can do any color combinations, pattern...

 Step 6: Add color to your bird. NOTE: I started doing the background of the bird.

Grade 6 Value Scale and One Point Perspective Landscape

Assignment-1 Point Perspective (2 sessions)

Step 1: Create a value scale (30 minutes)
Supplies: Pencil, ruler, eraser, and paper.

Learning objectives:
A. The student will create a 10 square value scale, identify the values, and shade in each value. 1-3 Light Values, 4-7 Medium Values, and 8-10 Dark Values. See example and video below.
B. Below the Value Scale, the student will three 3-D shapes with a cast shadow. The shapes are: Cube, Pyramid, and Cylinder. The shapes will be shaded.

C. When you are finished, take photo and submit on classroom for feedback.

Step 2: Create draft to 1-Point Perspective landscape. (50+ minutes)
Supplies: Pencil, ruler, eraser, and paper.

Vocabulary: Vanishing point, Types of Lines (horizontal, vertical, parallel, diagonal, and organic), Foreground, Middle Ground, Background, Rendering, Source of Light, Depth, and Perspective.

Learning Objectives:
A. Student will learn how to draw a 1-point perspective landscape drawing using a variety of lines to show depth and details.

C: Establish a horizon line and vanishing point on you paper and continue.
D: When you are finished, take photo and submit on classroom for feedback.

Junk Food Project steps.

Hello from a distance. We will be continuing our Junk Food project. Your parents should have picked up your folder with a large white paper (or your started project/draft inside) and watercolors. Because of the distance learning, we have shifted the project media from oil pastels to watercolor (unless you already started on oil pastels).

Below are the steps to the project with photos.    

Grade 8
Junk Food project.

Step 1:
In preparing for the larger, the theme will be JUNK FOOD. I would like for you to answer the following questions and submit them by a Google Doc. (Only 10 of you have done this so far) This is part of the project and the evaluation.

1. In your own words how do you define junk food? 
2. Why do you think the term junk food is used?
3. What are your favorite junk foods?
4. What is the appeal of junk food to consumers?
5. What do you think are some of the negatives of junk food consumption?
6. If someone made the statement that “Junk food is NOT eco friendly” what do you think the person means by that?

Step 2:
Decide what your favorite junk food is by creating a list. Research images of your favorite junk food- not just the packaging, but the "food" itself, note the colors, texture, the feel, look at it close up, etc. Once you have done this, make a sketch(s) using paper and pencil by collaging all your junk food together to form a composition. The numbers of ways you can approach this infinite. See example below. Images are borrowed form the usual suspects: Google, Pinterest, etc.

Step 3:
Share the draft with me for feedback and approval before moving to the large paper. You can simply take a photo and e-mail it to me.

Step 4:
Transfer the draft to the large paper. About 5-6 of you have already started the large paper.

Step 5:
Once you have transferred the draft to the large paper, use a waterproof pen (I highly recommend a Uni-ball pen) to trace your pencil lines. Use an eraser to remove the pencil lines.

Step 6: I will send you a video demo on adding color later this week.

Architecture Questions for Mixed Media

Grade 7 & 8 Mixed Media,

We will be putting the group video on hold and will return to it in April when we return to school. We will be starting our Batik style Architecture cloth painting.

Topic: Architecture
Part 1: Define and Identify what Architecture is. Research and share your opinions (approx. 50 minutes)

Please answer the following questions IN COMPLETE SENTENCES on a Google Doc and share it with me. (approx. 50 minutes)
1. In your own words, what is architecture?
2. Would you consider architecture art? Why or why not.
3. What type of architecture appeals to you? Take and submit 2 screen shots of buildings and explain why they appeal to you.
4. Research the following terms: Unusual architecture, weird buildings, strange buildings, bizarre architecture, redefining architecture, unique buildings, etc. Take and submit 2 screen shots of unique buildings and explain why they appeal to you. Take and submit 2 screen shots of unique buildings that DON’T appeal to you and explain why.
5. “Physical surroundings can have a major impact on a person. There's a growing body of research that suggests architecture affects us both physically and emotionally.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Defend your response
